Ozone Therapy: A Medical Reality

Our Medical Director and Founder, Dr. Gehad El Bastawisy, in an interview with Neil Prendeville on RED FM, explained the multiple benefits of Ozone Therapy in different conditions that cause chronic pain such as herniated discs, osteoarthritis knees, the treatment of wounds such as diabetic foot or leg ulcers, as well as his experience in the management of patients with sequelae of COVID 19 infection through ozone treatment.

But… What is ozone therapy?

Ozone therapy is the use of Medical Ozone as a biological medicine, suitable and safe to be applied in numerous diseases, all of them in relation to cellular damage due to excess free radicals (oxidative stress). Ozone acts as a true cellular “garbage can”, cleaning free radicals.

What are the therapeutic effects of ozone therapy?

  1. STIMULATION OF THE CIRCULATION OF THE BLOOD. Ozone cures because it improves metabolism. On the one hand, blood circulation improves in the affected tissues. On the other hand, the transport of oxygen, and therefore the supply of energy to the inflamed areas, is improved. The successive applications of medical ozone at a general level (systemic) result in a significant increase in the supply of oxygen in all the cells of the body, which implies, broadly speaking, an improvement in the cellular capacity to repair itself, substantially decreasing cellular damage. due to lack of oxygenation, regardless of the underlying disease.
  2. ACTIVATION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: The immune system is positively stimulated by medical ozone. On the one hand, the products resulting from the decomposition of ozone behave as biological activators of monocytes and T lymphocytes (defense cells of the body) producing a progressive release of cytokines such as interferon (IFN) gamma and beta, the factor of tumor necrosis (TNF) and various types of interleukins (IL) that enhance the capacity of our defensive system, for the benefit of allergic-autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, asthma or rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, as ozone induces more aggressive leukocytes, it causes viruses to be attacked more quickly and with greater force.
  3. GENERAL GERMICIDAL ACTIVITY: Medical ozone also acts as an anti-infective, with powerful fungicidal, bactericidal, and virucidal properties.
  4. STIMULATION OF ENZYMATIC DEFENSES: Different scientific works have shown that ozone stimulates the production of the three enzymes that make up the body’s main defense against free radicals: superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Thus, the ozone would act by cleaning cellular debris that accumulates throughout life by neutralizing free radicals. According to this concept, preventive ozone therapy would have a “cellular anti-aging effect”, since the current concept of aging is based on the accumulation of radicals at the intracellular level (oxidative stress). These conclusions may have an important practical implication, since chronic viral infections, cancer, autoimmune deficiencies, and neurodegenerative disorders are accompanied by a pro-oxidant state with a progressive deterioration of intracellular detoxification. It is because of this principle that good results are being obtained in patients with sequelae from COVID 19 treated with ozone therapy.
  5. REGENERATION OF TISSUES: Ozone has been shown to have a stimulating effect on the reticuloendothelial system, being able to repair and recover the inner wall of small blood vessels, achieving a high degree of efficiency in the recovery of ulcers in diabetic patients. It has also shown a beneficial effect on nitric oxide, crucial in maintaining capillary dilation and blood flow at optimal levels, improving the symptoms of patients with venous or arterial insufficiency.
  6. METABOLIC REGULATOR: Different studies have shown the regulatory action of ozone on cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, uric acid, and glucose in the blood, decreasing the values when they are high and stabilizing the values at optimal levels. There is clinical evidence that validates ozone therapy as a treatment that improves the quality of life of patients with diabetes, to the extent that some insulin-dependent people have been able to reduce their insulin dose by 30 to 50%, due to the ability of ozone to enhance cell glycolysis (use of sugar).

For all the benefits mentioned above, ozone therapy opens a complementary opportunity gap for treatments in:

  • Dermatology and angiology: Wounds, burns, infected ulcers of torpid evolution or difficult to heal (diabetic foot), and venous insufficiency (thrombophlebitis).
  • Infectious diseases of viral origin (hepatitis or herpes) or caused by fungi (mycosis).
  • Ophthalmology: Retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and maculopathies.
  • Rheumatology, traumatology, and rehabilitation: Herniated discs, fibromyalgia, and arthritis.
  • Allergic-autoimmune diseases: psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, urticaria, and skin pruritus (itching).
  • Oncology: Adjuvant in radiotherapy.
  • Aesthetic medicine: As a skin rejuvenating agent (anti-aging effect) and for the treatment of localized lipodystrophies (cellulite).
  • Gynecology: Vulvovaginitis and vaginitis of fungal or bacterial origin.
  • Neurology: Adjuvant in the treatment of vascular headaches, cerebral sclerosis, and Parkinson’s.
  • Gastroenterology: Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel, hemorrhoids, fissures, and anal fistulas.
  • Psychiatry: General state relief with increased vitality, antidepressant action, and improved sleep.
  • Geriatrics: Ozone therapy is considered an important therapeutic tool to increase the quality of life of elderly patients with pneumonia, bronchial asthma, diabetes, or hypercholesterolemia. Likewise, it increases brain oxygenation and improves symptoms of memory loss, circulatory difficulty in the legs, and fatigue.
  • Post-COVID syndrome, for long-term effects of coronavirus.

Ozone therapy is a line of treatment that is increasingly demonstrating its effectiveness. Although no relevant side effects have been reported, it is important that the patient first undergoes an adequate medical evaluation that establishes the correct diagnosis of their disease and performs ozone therapy in places with doctors trained and experienced in regenerative treatments.

At Regenecare we have an Ozone Therapy center directed by Dr. Gehad El Bastawisy, a Consultant in Pain Management and an expert in Regenerative Therapy with more than 30 years of experience.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you require more information about ozone therapy.

  • Hi there,
A friend recommended ozone therapy to me.
I am new to it and I am wondering how long do the sessions last, what is the recommended frequency to receive the treatments and also the price?
    Many thanks,
    Deborah

    • Hi Deborah, thank you for your inquiry. Ozone treatment is recommended on a weekly basis for at least 4 sessions to see the required effects. Each session is 150 Euro. You can call 01 6853000 to book an appointment.
